TON Foundation launches domain names like Ethereum Name Service

Open Network Foundation (TON) is the latest cryptocurrency company to upgrade its ecosystem with domain names like Ethereum Name Service (ENS).

The TON Foundation on Thursday announced the launch of TON DNS, a new service that allows users to assign human readable names to cryptocurrency wallets, smart contracts and websites.

Like other popular cryptocurrency-related domain names like “.eth” or “.crypto”, “.ton” is a TON DNS domain and will allow users to easily access decentralized applications.

With TON DNS, users will be able to use simple and short domain names instead of typing a long string of letters and numbers.

Not only will a domain name created with YOUR DNS work as a nickname but it will also unlock a wallet address. The TON Foundation also plans to integrate its TON DNS technology into the TON Sites and TON Proxy tools, scheduled for launch in Q3 2022.

“Therefore, .ton domain name is welcomed as an alternative to centralized domain registries, which have the ability to arbitrarily block website domains,” the announcement notes.

Along with the launch of DNS TON, the foundation announced that it would hold an auction of the first “.ton” domain names on July 30. The auction was “designed to be as decentralized as possible, on equal terms” for all participants, the TON foundation said, adding that it will be run on smart contracts for a period of seven days.

“In particular, signals from the sale of all domains will be withdrawn from distribution – these signals will be sent to a smart contract that cannot be withdrawn,” the announcement notes.

The launch of TON DNS closely follows the integration of the TON blockchain with mobile robots and Telegram wallets earlier this year. “Launching TON DNS will simplify how users interact with the TON blockchain and continue to make TON more accessible,” the foundation said.

As announced on Saturday, TON DNS support is also integrated into services like The Tonkeeper, TON Web Wallet and Tonscan.

This news comes shortly after the TON Foundation announced the end of mining for the full issue of 5 billion Toncoin on Thursday. The end of Toncoin mining was a milestone in TON distribution, beginning its new era as a full-proof blockchain.
