During a conference in New York, held on Wednesday, Solana Labs CEO Anatoly Yakovenko made an unexpected announcement to say the least. Solana will launch its first web3 – designed smartphone, the Saga, in 2023.
The Saga smartphone promises
Solana revealed this Wednesday during a conference in New York, launched its mobile subsidiary Solana and its first smartphone designed for Web3, the Saga. Built on Android, the Saga will launch DApps Store, a secure key storage solution, crypto wallet, Solana Pay and many more.
The Sagana Mobile Stack ecosystem will feature in the Saga, a system development equipment (SDK) designed for simplify the creation of Web3 applications on mobile phones. To boost their mobile environment, the Solana Foundation has also launched a $ 10 million investment program for DApps developers who want to enrich the mobile ecosystem on the SOL blockchain.
Solana teamed up with mobile phone manufacturer Osom to develop the Saga. The general public knows very little, Osom is the heir to the Essential company created by Android co-founder Andy Rubin, who went bankrupt in 2018. Osom announced that it was working on the development of its first mobile device, called the OV1, which was scheduled for release in 2022. This project was finally completed in favor of the Saga, which will retain the aesthetics of the OV1.
As for the technical specifications, the Saga will remain rather classic, yet effective, with 120Hz 6.67-inch OLED screen, 512GB of storage and 12GB of RAM. The smartphone will have a processor Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 presented by Qualcomm last month.
Mobile, the next challenge for Web3
According to Anatoly Yakovenko, Web3 integration on mobile phones would be too long to come. Emphasized on the urgency and need to develop Web3 – compatible smartphones, he declared:
Developers have been stuck for a long time creating truly decentralized mobile apps because the gate-retention model no longer works. (…) We live our lives on our mobile devices, except on the Web3, because there is no mobile-centric approach to private key management. The Solana Mobile Stack ecosystem shows a new path for Solana that is open source, secure, web3 optimized and easy to use.
Other similar projects have failed
The Saga is not the first blockchain – powered smartphone. BOB Pundi X, Finney Siri Labs or HTC’s Exodus 1s are less encrypted mobile phones. Will it be different for the Saga? Can.
The true originality that Solana mobile offers is a part of it Solana Mobile Stack that could catalyze the development of Dapps on mobile. However, it is currently difficult to imagine the widespread acceptance of this niche product. the price displayed at 1,000 dollars could hinder its democratization.
The price of SOL increased with this announcement
Following this announcement, Solana (SOL) price had a new bullish inflection.. Trading at $ 34.14 before the Saga announcement, SOL has jumped 20% since Wednesday. He is trading today for around $ 40 after making a small correction on Friday. It should be noted that the SOL was already doing well in this period bear market surfing on a small upward recovery from June 13th. Although the decline has been mitigated recently, the SOL has drained 86% since November 2021.
