What is the Ropsten testnet?
The announcement came via Twitter through Tim Beiko himself, one of the Ethereum developers. On June 9, 2022, he sent a tweet announcing that Ropsten network merger ! Ethereum developers have been waiting for this phase for a long time in light of the arrival of version 2.0.
To fully understand the scope of this event, we need to return to what Ropsten is. Testnet is called Ropsten. As its name implies, a test net consists of a network created for testing purposes only. If it works like a classic blockchain network, testnet does not involve real funds. This way, developers can do as many tests as they want without any impact. Created in 2016, Ropsten is the oldest testnet on Ethereum.
The fact that the Ropsten network came together on June 8 is already a success. Why? On May 18, 2022, Ethereum developers extended the Merger date to June 8th. Deal!
Merger on Ropsten: What Does It Mean?
As a reminder, Ethereum 2.0 will leave the Proof-Off-Work (POW) model that is too energy intensive for accept Proof of Commitment (POS). This change will make the Ethereum blockchain more environmentally friendly. In addition, it will enhance the network’s ability to manage transactions. Currently, in the absence of a second tier solution like Polygon, the scalability of the Ethereum blockchain is only 30 TPS (Transactions per Second).
However, it is this move that has just been successfully tested on a small scale on Ropsten testnet. The Ropsten testnet is merged with the Ethereum Chain POS beacon. Concretely from this merger, Ropsten has no more miners. these miners have “replacement” validations as is the case in a blockchain that uses Proof-Of-Stake (POS).
After this big step, what about the arrival of Ethereum 2.0? Two important updates are yet to come. At the 3.0 web developers summit in Shanghai, Vitalik Buterin himself spoke about his the arrival of Ethereum 2.0 in the summer of 2022 ! So be patient… Ethereum 2.0 should arrive in 2022!
