A copy of the Linux source code arrived today, containing the words ” I am Satoshi“, A reference to the creator of Bitcoin, Satoshi Nakamoto. However, this statement seems like a joke and certainly does not come from Torvalds himself.
The message seems to be a joke
Rumors were swirled earlier today that Linux inventor Linus Torvalds cryptically implied that he was an inventor of Bitcoin. These rumors, however, are probably just that.
The words » I am Satoshi included in a copy of the Linux kernel makefile under ” name“. The file is included in the Linux creator Linus Torvalds’ GitHub repository.
While it may seem at first glance that Torvalds himself posted this phrase as a joke, it is not certain that he did. GitHub’s design allows other users to fork out a repository and make changes that appear to belong to the original repository owner.
Earlier someone used a similar tactic to entice users to quit Linux. The readme forked file says: ” Hey guys my name is linus torvalds, author of the smash hit linux and goes on to promote Windows XP.
The latest version of the Linux makefile in the main repository includes the words ” Gobble Gobble in the name field.
Torvalds has taken a standalone approach to hosting the Linux kernel copy on GitHub, hosting the master copy on kernel.org.
Linus Torvalds is not Nakamoto
While Torvalds is highly likely to be the true identity of Bitcoin creator Satoshi Nakamoto, the two characters were compared because they both created well-known free software.
In addition, some of them noted similarities between the Bitcoin version control system and Torvalds’ Git. While Git is not a real blockchain, it is a ledger that uses cryptographic hashing and can be considered a distant relative of blockchain.
It is not known that Torvalds ever made public comment on Bitcoin. In 2014, it was discovered that some developers, including Torvalds, were not collecting bitcoin tips sent to them through the Tip4Commit service, suggesting that the Linux founder is not interested in cryptocurrencies.
One of Torvalds’ contemporaries, GNU founder Richard Stallman, publicly criticized Bitcoin in 2020. He criticized the privacy of the coin and said it avoided all digital payments.
